The second record I’ll be featuring tonight is called Moving Through Light, by Daniel Bachman. The first time I saw Daniel was at the Pinhook in Durham, maybe a dozen years ago. He was well entrenched in the John Fahey/Jack Rose tradition of American primitive guitar, and he was really good at it. I was living in a big house in the county at the time, and hosting house concerts once or twice a year. We brought Daniel in to play one, and I’ll not forget how 40 people sat entranced, hardly making a sound, for two hours.

Daniel’s music has evolved in unpredictable directions since then. The change really becomes noticeable, I think, on 2021’s Axacan LP, and continues to develop on the subsequent records Almanac Behind and When the Roses Come Again. Moving Through Light continues this remarkable transformation. Daniel Bachman is becoming one of the most singular voices in American music right before our eyes, and I’m happy to be playing a track from the new record this week, and probably more in weeks to come.
