The 45th annual Guinness Jazz Festival comes to Cork City at the end of October. Here’s a short list of acts that have caught my eye.
Brandee Younger at the Triskel Arts Centre, 27 October
Certain instruments come to define certain eras in popular music. The electric guitar, sitar, harpsichord, Moog synthesizer, tenor saxophone, all can evoke specific times. In times to come, it’s possible that the harp will be linked to the early years of the 21st century. Mary Lattimore, Nailah Hunter, Joanna Newsom, and Brandee Younger are among a group of artists who are creating unexpected sounds from the age-old instrument. Younger’s set at the Triskel looks to be one of the highlights of the weekend.
Vieux Farka Touré at Cyprus Avenue, 29 October
When your dad is the legendary Ali Farka Touré, you’ve got to scale some dizzying heights to achieve recognition in your own right. Vieux Farka Touré is that good. Even better, for an old fart like myself, his set at Cyprus Avenue is a matinee.
ECM at the Triskel Arts Centre, 29 October
Actually 2 different events. First, a daytime set featuring the trio of Hanna Weinmeister, violin; Anja Lechner, cello; and Anna Gourari, piano. Followed by an evening double bill with the Oded Tzur Quartet, and the Marcin Wasilewski Trio.
But really, the whole weekend looks great. Get out and see some live music!
